New Hair, New Piercing, Totally Loving Life After Leaving 1D
The tweets emerged almost a month after Zayn, engaged to Little Mix star Perrie Edwards, reacted angrily to claims of a fling while partying in Indonesia during a break from One Direction's mammoth On The Road Again stadium tour.
Tweeting on March 18, he wrote: 'I'm 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f***s in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x.'
The singer was referring to images, published by MailOnline, in which he is seen partying with tattooed holidaymaker Lauren Richardson at the Seduction nightclub in Phuket.
Soon after Zayn jetted back to the United Kingdom suffering from 'exhaustion' before releasing a short statement announcing his decision to leave the band.
Zayn made his first public appearance post-departure at the Asian Awards in London on Friday evening, and he used his Twitter account to retweet a snap of himself posing with producer Naughty Boy and celebrated Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan.
Fans are still reeling following his shock departure, but according to filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, it won't be long before another member of One Direction decides to call it a day.
Morgan directed the band's 2013 docufilm One Direction: This Is Us, spending months on the road with the then five-piece, filming their every move.
The director is now adamant that the group won't stay together for much longer, predicting that Harry Styles will be next to go solo.
Speaking to TMZ over the weekend, the US filmmaker gave his take on the rollercoaster month One Direction and their fans have been through.
Admitting he shed a tear after hearing the news that Zayn had left the mega successful group, Morgan added that this could be the beginning of the end for remaining members Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne.
'I think they'll stay together for a little bit longer and I think at some point Harry will probably leave,' said Morgan.
'He'll probably be next and then Niall and Louis and eh... I think those three guys are going to become like the new Bell Biv DeVoe,' he joked of the US trio who branched off from New Edition in the early nineties.
Morgan went on to insist that he wasn't shocked that Zayn was the first to leave, calling the 22-year-old 'the most talented guy in that group.'
'He's an incredible singer. All of them are talented singers, that's why they were all put together but to make the decision to leave and go off on your own and chase a solo career in the midst of being as famous as you are, as succesful as you are - you can't fault someone for that,' he pointed out.
Following Zayn's departure, Harry, Liam, Louis and Niall wrapped up the latest leg of their On The Road Again tour before heading off on a break. While Louis, Liam and Niall have returned home to the UK, Harry has been busy spending time with his pals in Los Angeles.
Zayn meanwhile has been hanging out with new pal, producer Naughty Boy, with the two sneaking in a quick cigarette break during the Asian Awards on Friday night.
The pair – who are thought to be working together on Zayn’s solo material – puffed away on cigarettes and roll ups outside London’s Grosvenor hotel.
Naughty Boy was on hand to present Zayn with the Outstanding Contribution to Music award on the night - Malik’s first-ever independent award and also his first award, since leaving 1D to go solo.
Starting his speech humbly, Zayn said: ‘I’m not really a guy of many words normally. I don’t normally do the speeches.
‘I'd like to thank my mum and dad, and I'd also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys that I ever met whilst being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did.
'Some of the things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life and I’m thankful for that.'
Malik ended his speech by saying: 'Here's to the future.'
Naughty Boy angered One Direction fans and Zayn’s fellow bandmate Louis Tomlinson when he tweeted a link to unheard music with featured Zayn’s vocals.
The track I Won't Mind was shared on (and swiftly removed from) SoundCloud by the producer but a source close to Zayn, 22, exclusively told MailOnline that it was in fact an old song, which was recorded for but ultimately did not make it on to One Direction's last album FOUR.
The insider explained: 'It's important fans know this isn't a solo Zayn song or even representative of material he might record in the future. If you listen to the track it is clearly a song written with One Direction in mind for their last album. It's not new, nor is it a Zayn Malik solo track.'
A rep for Naughty Boy confirmed the story to MailOnline, explaining: 'Naughty Boy and Zayn wrote and demoed it as a contender for 1D's album last year.
'They aren't furiously working on his solo material or anything, there aren't plans for anything and this wasn't recorded in the last few days. They are very good friends and Zayn is taking time out including visiting Naughty Boy at his studio and hanging out.'
After Naughty Boy shared a link to a video with the words 'Naughty Boy saved my life...Zaughty will rise,' an infuriated Louis hit back tweeting: ‘Wow @NaughtyBoyMusic you're so inconsiderate pal, seriously how f****** old are you ? Grow up! #masterofallwisdom.'
Zayn has been hitting the headlines for the past month after announcing his departure from One Direction.
But he put the drama to one side at his first public appearance since the shock revelation as he took his mum Trisha to the awards - as well as showing off his new buzzcut.
The former-boyband-member had shorn off his long locks, ditching a top knot in favour of an extreme shaved head.
Zayn was looking sharp in a navy suit and black tie with a simple white shirt and a pair of suede black boots.
His mother had chosen an outfit in keeping with the theme of the event, wearing a bejewelled floor-length black dress.
She upped the bling factor with a silver clutch bag and matching chunky bracelet.
The pair looked unfazed by recent chatter about Zayn and his departure from the world's biggest boy band.
Zayn announced that he was leaving the group to go and 'be a normal 22-year-old' at the end of March, to the surprise of fans and even his manager Simon Cowell.
Amidst all the drama surrounding a potential solo career, Simon Cowell has recently stated that he was shocked by Zayn's decision to leave after five years.
He spoke on The Late Late Show with James Corden and said, 'I was trying to say to him he should stay around a bit longer. But something inside him said he'd had enough.
'I saw him in person as well - but once someone has made their mind up they are going to go.
'At the same time I don't want to push him too much because he's 22 and I could see he was a bit stressed and needed some time off.'
Thereafter, Simon said his priority was to ensure that the other members of the group - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan - weren't unnerved by losing one of their band members.
He explained: 'I dealt with it then I made sure the guys were OK - because they were shocked as well.
'So I had to respect his decision. For the boys it was interesting because they were in the middle of these live shows at the time.
'Then I watched the show back and they were incredible. I have a feeling they are going to deliver the best record they have ever made.'
